IUG Upskilling: Compact. Flexible. Certified.

• 250+ professional online courses; IUG employees can take four per year.
• Training topics include Prompt Engineering, AI Basics and Digital Transformation.
• No entry barriers: 100% free, no exams, no higher education entrance qualification (HZB) required.
• Certified outcomes: up to four Nano Degrees* or one Diploma per year. Ideal for those who want to explore new topics quickly, directly and with practical relevance. Here you can find the IUG Academy’s development options from which IUG employees can freely choose.

What is a Nano Degree or a Diploma? A Nano Degree is a compact, practice‑oriented online programme completed within weeks or months. It focuses on specific professional skills (for example data analysis or programming) and concludes with a certificate, but does not confer an academic title. Diplomas are made up of a sequence of stackable Nano Degrees and also lead to a certificate.

Employee Modules: Hands on university courses

• Free choice from more than 3,500 modules across our study programmes; IUG employees can take four online.
• Future focused courses: individual modules from our degrees such as Cloud Computing and Introduction to Programming with Python (from Data Science), or Artificial Intelligence (from Cyber Security). You can find more about our distance learning course modules here.
• 100% free for IUG employees.
• Academic credit included: ECTS* and an official transcript after taking the examination (subject to HZB). Perfect for anyone seeking university level learning without committing to a full degree.

ECTS stands for the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, which makes academic achievements comparable and transferable across Europe.

A full degree: 250+ ways to earn a recognised distance learning qualification

• 100% discount on tech programmes and 50% on all others for IUG employees.
• Recognised qualifications: Bachelor’s, Master’s, MBA; choose freely from 250+ programmes.
• Full academic award, including certificate and transcript. Ideal for those who want to underpin their long term career path with a recognised degree. You can find our full range of distance learning programmes here.

As an IUG employee, you can take four IUG Upskilling courses or four Employee Modules each year, and additionally undertake an employee degree of your choice.

Our Learning Hub: Learn on your terms

In addition to the three university level formats, every IUG employee has access to the IUG Learning Hub, with over 1,250 courses including more than 140 focused on AI. From practical introductions to specialised applications and expert level content, you’ll find everything you need to develop yourself individually and flexibly.

AI Barcamp: Try, share, apply

The AI Barcamp is a community driven format focused on artificial intelligence. The agenda is co created: colleagues from different areas pitch sessions, exchange ideas peer to peer and experiment in short labs—on site and via livestream. Anyone can contribute a session.

In 2025, we successfully piloted the format at the Cologne campus. Topics ranged from Copilot and Agents (Microsoft) to “AI ready with LinkedIn” and “Build your own Bot”. External speakers framed the programme, including the keynote “Human & AI” by Henriette Hochstein Frädrich.

The aim is to strengthen collaborative learning and make AI responsible, effective and usable in everyday work. We are evolving the Barcamp based on feedback and plan to run it again.

Lunch Talks: Learn together, share knowledge

Another popular format at IUG is Lunch Talks @IUG. The idea: in a relaxed lunchtime setting, colleagues present topics that interest them – independent of their official roles. It’s not about classic project updates, but about content that others may find engaging or inspiring. Anyone can sign up as a speaker and propose a topic.

This year, for instance, we hosted “AI News – What You Need to Know in the Late Spring of 2025”, covering current developments in AI. Formats like these not only foster knowledge exchange, they also help us gain fresh perspectives on AI, true to the motto: learning with and from one another.

Conclusion: The future doesn’t happen by itself, we shape it

We invest in people development because we believe it powers our shared progress. That’s why IUG invests not only in technology, but also in the development of our colleagues by giving access to relevant knowledge, offering formats that fit our people, and trusting them to chart their own learning journeys.
